Focus: Design challenges in the new broadcast environment

The primary focus of this study is information layout standards
for television broadcast graphics, with a particular focus on
the emerging broadcast environment. This will be represented
through the development of a set of design standards for the
new broadcast environment.

The new environment is comprised of a digital signal, allowing
for higher quality sound and image (HDTV) and new screen
ratios (16:9). Currently, broadcast graphics are arranged in title
safe areas to account for the lowest common denominator,
that of the 4:3 ratio CRT screens. This study explores design
for an environment where this situation no longer applies.

The study outcomes will be represented in the form of a screen
layout standard and application of the layout through the
development of a brand for a fictional television network. This
includes applying the brand to the screen, title information and
in-program advertisments.
